How to effectively report a claim for auto or property damage

Accidents, break-ins, and property damage incidents can be unsettling at best. But the more information you can provide your insurance company with, the more effectively and quickly they can process your claim. By using the following step-by-step guides to reporting an auto accident, fire, water escape or wind damage to your property, or break-ins or theft, you'll help your broker expedite your claim and get faster results.

Reporting auto claims step by step

  1. In case of accident, stay calm; check that you and your passengers are all O.K
  2. If there is a personal injury, or if damages exceed $1,000, you must call the police.
  3. Write down all necessary accident scene information:
    1. Date and time of accident
    2. Location of accident
    3. How accident happened
    4. Damage to your vehicle
    5. Other driver involved: i.e., drivers name, phone number, driver's licence number, licence plate number, insurance company, policy number, any injuries sustained
    6. Damage to other vehicle
    7. Investigating police (if any): i.e., name, division number, badge number, accident report number
